General Information

“Embedded systems design” direction was formed at ITMO Computer Science Department in the late 1970s. Scientific and practical works actively are carried out during more than 30 years. The department collective has gained wide experience in development, production and adoption of complex embedded systems (ES) of different applications, has groundwork in IP-cores design for systems on chip (SoC), experience of problem-oriented processors realization for real time tasks on high-capacity FPGA.

The team has methodical and technological groundwork in specialized computing systems creation issues: a number of original computational models; aspect design methodology; the problem-oriented translators and virtual machines; real time operating systems, protocol stacks; computational-communication platforms for SoC, various tools. The team has developed and actively expands High-Level Design Methodology for Embedded Systems (HLD-methodology).

Since 2006, the team has been developing “Embedded systems and systems on chip design” field within the framework of ITMO innovative-educational program and NRU ITMO development program realization. Now the international scientific laboratory of architectures and design techniques for embedded systems and systems on chip is engaged in research of the issues, related to ES, real time systems, reconfigurable systems, and systems on chip and cyber-physical systems design.

Embedded systems design is a complex branch of human activity. It is connected with booming growth of various electronic devices market and the necessity of universal automation of the increasing quantity of various areas. Modern developments are connected with creation of more and more complex computational architectures, which utilize heterogeneous, multicore systems on chip, reconfiguration principles, networked solutions. Such systems actively use signal processing, as well as direct interaction with physical processes.

The multicomponent distributed ES, sensor networks work in severe operational environment, in real time, and increased demands on reliability, safety, power efficiency are made to them. Many specialists mark considerable successes in the field of various ES design techniques, methodologies and technologies creation. Nevertheless, growth rate of systems complexity exceeds development rate of new design ways.

In the Laboratory of Architectures and Design Techniques for Embedded Systems and Systems on Chip, research works on embedded systems design techniques are carried out. These techniques have been formed as ES HLD-methodology.
